In 1976, VF-124 'Gunfighters,' the U.S. Navy's Fleet Replacement Squadron for the F-14 Tomcat, celebrated America's Bicentennial with a specially painted F-14A. This striking aircraft featured a bold red, white, and blue color scheme with stars and stripes on the tail and fuselage, honoring 200 years of American independence. As VF-124 trained new Tomcat crews at NAS Miramar, the Bicentennial F-14A became a symbol of naval aviation pride and patriotism. Though not a combat unit, VF-124 played a crucial role in preparing aviators for fleet service, and its colorful Tomcat remains an iconic part of F-14 history. Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed 'Bombcat,' the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system.
