New Arrival: Academy 1/72 Grumman F-14A Tomcat (IRIAF)
We’re pleased to announce the arrival of a distinctive and historically important Tomcat variant — the Academy 12594 Grumman F-14A Tomcat (IRIAF) in 1/72 scale. This kit represents the Iranian Air Force’s iconic Tomcat, a unique chapter in Cold War and modern aviation history.
Historical context:
In the mid-1970s, Iran became the only foreign customer to operate the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. Delivered prior to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, these aircraft served with the Imperial Iranian Air Force and later the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF). Despite embargoes, lack of spare parts, and decades of political isolation, Iranian F-14s remained operational and saw extensive combat during the Iran–Iraq War (1980–1988), where they were credited with numerous aerial victories and long-range interceptions.
The IRIAF Tomcats are notable for their longevity, unique camouflage schemes, and adaptations made to keep them flying under challenging conditions — making them a fascinating subject for historians and modelers alike.
About the Academy kit:
Academy’s 1/72 F-14A offers sharp surface detail, accurate proportions, and a clean build suitable for both intermediate and experienced modelers. This release includes markings specific to Iranian-operated aircraft, allowing builders to create a Tomcat that stands apart from the more commonly modeled U.S. Navy versions.
Kit highlights:
- 1/72 scale plastic model of the F-14A Tomcat.
- IRIAF-specific markings and color schemes.
- Detailed cockpit and landing gear.
- Variable-geometry wings with sweep options.
- Excellent fit and buildability typical of Academy kits.
