Historical Context: BP42 and BP44 Armored Trains
With the outbreak of war in 1939, Germany organized several armored trains. By 1941 the Wehrmacht was also using captured Polish and Czech trains alongside earlier German designs. Using captured Polish and Russian trains as templates, the Germans developed a standard armored train in 1941 known as the BP42, later refined as the BP44.
These new trains borrowed greater artillery capability from the captured designs. They also addressed a perceived weakness: by splitting the artillery car in two and mounting only one gun on each car, the train lost less firepower if a single artillery car was knocked out. Modern anti-aircraft guns and dedicated tank-hunter cars were added, producing a formidable, self-contained fighting unit well suited to rear-area security and line-of-communication missions on the Eastern Front.
