New Arrival: Hasegawa 1/48 Kyushu J7W1 Shinden
We’re pleased to announce the arrival of a truly unusual and fascinating World War II aircraft design — the Hasegawa 09122 Kyushu J7W1 Shinden in 1/48 scale. This kit represents one of the most radical interceptor concepts developed by Japan during the final months of the war.
Historical context:
The Kyushu J7W1 Shinden was conceived as a high-performance interceptor intended to counter high-altitude U.S. B-29 Superfortress raids over Japan. Its canard configuration, with forward-mounted control surfaces and a rear-mounted pusher propeller, was chosen to provide excellent forward visibility and concentrate heavy cannon armament in the nose.
Although the Shinden showed promise on paper, the program was hampered by late-war shortages, technical challenges, and the rapidly deteriorating strategic situation. Only a small number of prototypes were completed, and the aircraft never reached operational service before Japan’s surrender in 1945. As a result, the J7W1 remains one of the most intriguing “what-if” aircraft of World War II.
About the Hasegawa kit:
Hasegawa’s 1/48 scale Shinden kit captures the aircraft’s distinctive layout with accurate proportions and clean molding. The kit offers finely detailed cockpit components and crisp surface detail, making it an excellent choice for modelers interested in experimental aircraft or late-war Japanese aviation.
Kit highlights:
- Accurate 1/48 scale representation of the Kyushu J7W1 Shinden.
- Distinctive canard and pusher-propeller configuration.
- Detailed cockpit and airframe surfaces.
- Ideal subject for late-war and experimental aircraft collections.
