Developed in the mid-1950s, the Huey originated from the 1955 United States Army trials of the Bell Model 204. The initial designation “HU-1”—standing for “Helicopter Utility” —earned the helicopter its enduring nickname, “Huey.”
First deployed in 1959, the Huey entered tri-service production in 1962 under the designation UH-1. Production continued until 1976, yielding over 16,000 units, of which approximately 7,000 served during the Vietnam War.
