The Reggiane Re.2002 Ariete was an Italian fighter-bomber developed during World War II. Designed by Roberto Longhi and Antonio Alesso in the summer of 1940, it was a further development of the Re.2000, incorporating a radial engine and a modified fuselage[2][3]. The aircraft was equipped with a 1,175hp Piaggio P.XIX RC.45 engine, giving it a top speed of 329 mph and a range of 685 miles - quite impressive for its time[2].
While the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Air Force) initially ordered 200 of these aircraft, Reggiane ultimately produced a total of 255 examples[2]. The Re.2002 saw action during the Allied landings in Sicily, but faced significant challenges against the more advanced Allied fighters[3].
