Historical Spotlight: Leviathans of the Late War
As World War II drew to a close, several nations were developing or deploying increasingly massive tanks and armored vehicles. These "super-heavy" tanks represented the pinnacle of armored warfare technology at the time.
Germany, in particular, invested heavily in the development of enormous tanks. The Tiger II, also known as the King Tiger, was one of the heaviest tanks to see combat during the war. Weighing in at nearly 70 tons, it boasted formidable armor and a powerful 88mm gun.
Even more ambitious was the Panzer VIII Maus, a prototype super-heavy tank that weighed an astonishing 188 tons. Only two prototypes were built before the war's end.
The Soviet Union also explored the concept of super-heavy tanks. The KV-4 and KV-5 projects envisioned tanks weighing over 100 tons, though they never progressed beyond the design stage.
While these massive vehicles often proved impractical on the battlefield due to their weight, limited mobility, and logistical challenges, they continue to captivate the imagination of historians and wargamers alike.
