Historical context:
Tatsuta was one of two Tenryū-class light cruisers, originally designed as fast flotilla leaders for destroyer squadrons. Commissioned in the early 1920s, she reflected post–World War I naval thinking, emphasizing speed and command capability rather than heavy armor or armament.
By 1944, Tatsuta was operating in a very different strategic environment.
