Staff Recommendation: Operation Linebacker II and the B-52 Raids on Hanoi
This week’s staff recommendation is a powerful and well-produced YouTube documentary examining one of the most dramatic episodes of the Vietnam War. We highly recommend this video for anyone interested in Cold War history, airpower, and high-level decision-making during wartime:

Context and background:
Near the end of the Vietnam War and with time against him, President Nixon decides to use overwhelming military force to bring the North Vietnamese to the negotiating table, and sends B-52s to the northern capital of Hanoi.
Known as Operation Linebacker II, these massive bombing raids in December 1972 represented the heaviest use of strategic bombers since World War II. For eleven days, U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortresses struck military and infrastructure targets around Hanoi and Haiphong in an effort to force a breakthrough in stalled peace negotiations.
The operation remains controversial, but it was undeniably pivotal. Within weeks, negotiations resumed, leading directly to the Paris Peace Accords. The video does an excellent job explaining not only what happened, but why it happened — exploring the political pressure on the Nixon administration, the risks involved, and the human cost on both sides.
Why we recommend it:
- Clear explanation of the strategic goals behind the B-52 raids.
- Strong use of maps, archival footage, and narration.
- Balanced discussion of military effectiveness and historical impact.
- Helpful context for understanding late–Cold War airpower doctrine.
This is a staff recommendation — not a paid endorsement. We’re sharing it because it provides thoughtful historical insight into a critical moment at the end of the Vietnam War and helps explain how airpower was used as a tool of diplomacy as well as combat.
