Historical context: the M60A2 “Starship”
The M60A2 was an ambitious and controversial evolution of the M60 Patton series, entering service in the mid-1970s. Unlike earlier variants, the A2 featured a radically redesigned low-profile turret armed with the 152mm M162 gun/launcher system. This weapon was intended to fire both conventional high-explosive rounds and the MGM-51 Shillelagh guided missile, allowing the tank to engage enemy armor at extended ranges.
Nicknamed the “Starship” because of its futuristic appearance and advanced electronics, the M60A2 incorporated cutting-edge technology for its time, including a laser rangefinder and sophisticated fire-control systems.
