Rare Dragon Models M60A2 'Starship" Kit

Rare Kit In Stock: Dragon 1/35 U.S. Army M60A2 “Starship”

We’re pleased to offer a genuinely uncommon armor kit that rarely appears in retail stock — the Dragon 3562 U.S. Army M60A2 “Starship” in 1/35 scale is currently in stock at Historia Emporium.

This kit is highly sought after by Cold War armor enthusiasts and collectors due to both the subject matter and Dragon’s long-discontinued production status.

Historical context: the M60A2 “Starship”
The M60A2 was an ambitious and controversial evolution of the M60 Patton series, entering service in the mid-1970s. Unlike earlier variants, the A2 featured a radically redesigned low-profile turret armed with the 152mm M162 gun/launcher system. This weapon was intended to fire both conventional high-explosive rounds and the MGM-51 Shillelagh guided missile, allowing the tank to engage enemy armor at extended ranges.

Nicknamed the “Starship” because of its futuristic appearance and advanced electronics, the M60A2 incorporated cutting-edge technology for its time, including a laser rangefinder and sophisticated fire-control systems. In practice, however, the system proved mechanically complex and difficult to maintain in field conditions. As a result, the M60A2 saw a relatively short service life before being withdrawn and converted to other roles.

Despite its operational challenges, the M60A2 remains one of the most distinctive Cold War armored vehicles ever fielded by the U.S. Army — and a fascinating example of 1970s military experimentation.

About the Dragon kit:
Dragon’s 1/35 scale M60A2 accurately captures the vehicle’s unique turret shape, gun system, and Cold War detailing. As with many Dragon armor releases, the kit emphasizes fine surface detail, crisp molding, and historically accurate proportions. Given its age and limited availability, it has become increasingly difficult to find in new condition.

Why this kit stands out:

  • Unusual Cold War subject rarely covered in plastic.
  • Distinctive low-profile “Starship” turret design.
  • Ideal for Vietnam-era and Cold War armor collections.
  • Long out of production and increasingly scarce.

This is an excellent opportunity for builders looking to add something truly different to their 1/35 armor lineup, or for collectors seeking a hard-to-find Dragon release.
