Tamiya's 1/48 Bf109 G-6 late production---Erla Haube canopy, late-model cowlings, and optional 21 cm rocket launchers.

About the Kit

This kit is a variation of Tamiya's Item 61117 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf109 G-6 early production model, inheriting that kit's faithfully researched fuselage and interchangeable open-or-closed engine cowlings (even after assembly). New parts recreate late-model characteristics including revised cowlings, the Erla Haube canopy, and 21 cm rocket launchers under the wings.

  • Erla Haube canopy with new transparent parts --- assemble open or closed
  • Interchangeable engine cowlings --- open or closed, swappable after assembly

Historical Context: The Bf109 G-6

With more than 30,000 produced, the Messerschmitt Bf109 is the most prolific fighter in history. Of its many variants, the G-6 was the most numerous at roughly 13,000 aircraft. Entering production from summer 1943, the G-6 introduced distinctive engine cowlings with a small bulge and air scoop under the right-side Beule, along with machine-gun ballistic groove panels on the upper nose.

By late 1943, many G-6s received the Erla Haube canopy with reduced framing for improved visibility---a hallmark of late-production aircraft. From August 1943, 21 cm rocket launchers were fitted under both wings as the G-6 was employed against four-engine bomber formations raiding Germany from the United Kingdom. The type served on both Western and Eastern fronts through the end of the war, remaining a formidable opponent against Soviet fighters in particular.

Tamiya's kit captures a pivotal late-war configuration---ideal for Luftwaffe collections, bomber-intercept dioramas, or pairing with Allied heavies on the shelf.

Builder Notes

The interchangeable cowlings and optional rocket launchers give real display flexibility; the Hermann Graf scheme adds a famous ace subject for collectors who want a named aircraft on the shelf. Because this kit sold through quickly on its first run, we recommend ordering while restocked copies are available.
