Historical Context: The KV-9 and the U-11 Howitzer
In the autumn of 1941, Soviet forces needed more mobile fire support on the Eastern Front. Under engineers V. Sidorenko and N. Usenko, work on what became Object 229 followed: essentially a KV-1 Model 1942 adapted to carry the 122 mm U-11 tank howitzer instead of the standard tank gun. Prototype construction ran into the spring of 1942; after successful trials, the design was accepted as the KV-9.
On paper the KV-9 was formidable: roughly 47 tons, a crew of four (two in the turret, two in the hull), and the familiar KV-1 style of cast turret with hull protection emphasizing thick frontal armor.
