Staff Pick: USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park
At Historia Emporium – The History Store, we’re always on the lookout for destinations that bring history to life. One such place that stands out is the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama.
Experience Naval History Firsthand
The centerpiece of the park is the USS Alabama (BB-60), a South Dakota-class battleship that earned nine battle stars during World War II. Commissioned in 1942, the "Mighty A" served valiantly in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. After decommissioning in 1947, the ship was destined for scrap until a dedicated group of Alabamians rallied to save her. Thanks to their efforts, the battleship was preserved and opened to the public on January 9, 1965.
Visitors can explore the ship's decks, gun turrets, and living quarters, gaining insight into the lives of the 2,500 crew members who once called the USS Alabama home.
Beyond the Battleship
The park offers more than just the battleship. It houses the USS Drum (SS-228), the oldest American submarine on public display. Guests can tour this World War II-era submarine and learn about its 72-member crew and their missions during the war.
The Aircraft Pavilion showcases an impressive collection of historic aircraft, including a B-52 Stratofortress, a P-51 Mustang flown by the Tuskegee Airmen, and a Lockheed A-12 spy plane. The park also features tanks, artillery, and memorials honoring veterans of various conflicts.
Plan Your Visit
The USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last ticket sold at 4:00 PM. The park is closed only on Christmas Day.
