Historical Context: The Maginot Line and the 1940 Campaign
The Maginot Line was France's massive chain of fortifications constructed along its border with Germany during the 1930s. Named after French Minister of War André Maginot, it was intended to deter invasion and channel any German attack through Belgium, where French forces could engage in the field.
In May 1940, Germany launched Fall Gelb (Case Yellow). German armored forces pushed through the Ardennes forest, bypassing the Maginot Line's strongest sections, and drove to the English Channel in weeks. The fortifications were never decisively breached — they were simply bypassed. The fall of France demonstrated the effectiveness of combined arms warfare and remains one of the most studied campaigns of the Second World War.
This starter set lets players recreate the early clashes of 1940 on the tabletop, with German armor and infantry pressing against French defenders in one of the war's most consequential opening campaigns.
