Historical Context: The Nakajima B5N "Kate"

The Nakajima B5N was the Imperial Japanese Navy's standard carrier-based torpedo bomber when Japan entered the Second World War. The Allies assigned the reporting name "Kate". The B5N2 (Type 97 Model 3) was the main production variant, powered by a Nakajima Sakae 11 radial engine and capable of carrying a single 800 kg (1,764 lb) torpedo or an equivalent bomb load.

On 7 December 1941, B5N2s formed the backbone of the strike force that attacked Pearl Harbor, delivering both torpedoes and bombs. "Kates" also saw heavy use at the Battle of Midway, the Indian Ocean raid, and throughout the Pacific campaign. Though gradually supplanted by the faster B6N "Jill," the B5N remained in front-line and secondary roles into 1944.

Why the "Kate" Still Matters

Modelers and historians value the B5N2 for its central role in the early Pacific War and its distinctive silhouette — a long, clean fuselage, low wing, and radial engine. In 1/48 scale, the Hasegawa Kate is a natural companion to other IJN subjects such as the A6M Zero, D3A "Val," or G4M "Betty," and fits collections focused on Pearl Harbor, Midway, or carrier aviation.
