The Italeri 1/32 Macchi MC.200 Saetta features new tooling, a super-detailed cockpit with 3D decals, finely detailed engine and nose gun bay, and PE parts. Six decal options included.

About the Kit

Italeri was founded in the early 1960s by enthusiasts who wanted better aircraft and military vehicle models than were available at the time. That passion drove them to research and produce the kits modelers wanted, and Italeri grew into a leading name in the hobby. This MC.200 kit is all new tooling and brand new in its original factory packaging. Highlights include:

  • 1/32 scale — large scale for maximum detail and presence
  • Super-detailed cockpit with 3D decals; canopy and wheels masking sheet included
  • Finely detailed engine and nose gun bay; detailed landing gear with optional well covers
  • Photo-etched (PE) parts for engine, flaps, cockpit, and overall detailing
  • Realistic panel lines and rivets; moveable wings and tail ailerons; open or closed flaps
  • Super decals sheet for 6 versions with colored painting and decals guide

Assembly and painting are required. Listing images are stock pictures from the manufacturer or distributor.

Historical Context: The Macchi MC.200 Saetta

The Macchi MC.200 Saetta ("Lightning"), designed by the renowned engineer Mario Castoldi, represented a significant evolution in Italian fighter aircraft production. Compared to the Fiat CR.32 and Fiat CR.42 biplanes that still formed the backbone of Italian fighter units at the beginning of World War II, the Macchi MC.200—along with its contemporary Fiat G.50—stood out for its monoplane configuration and all-metal construction.

Powered by a 14-cylinder, twin-row Fiat A.74 RC.38 radial engine delivering 840 hp, the MC.200 could reach speeds of up to 500 km/h. When compared to its Allied counterparts, however, the MC.200 proved underpowered and lightly armed. Its armament consisted of only two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns mounted above the engine's distinctive bulged cowling; in later versions, two additional 7.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns were installed in the wings.

The aircraft was employed by the Regia Aeronautica on major World War II fronts, including North Africa, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and the Eastern Front in Russia. Despite its limitations, the Saetta was rugged and maneuverable, and it remained in service in various roles well into the war.
