The Space Launch System and Artemis
The Space Launch System (SLS) is NASA's super-heavy-lift launch vehicle, developed for the Artemis program. The SLS and Orion spacecraft capsule form the backbone of America's return to the Moon. The vehicle made its unmanned maiden launch on 16 November 2022 (Artemis I). The first crewed launch is planned for Artemis II, when Orion will perform a lunar flyby—paving the way for lunar landings and eventual missions beyond.
