New Arrival: Academy 1/48 Sikorsky MH-53E Sea Dragon
We’re pleased to announce the arrival of an impressive modern rotary-wing subject — the Academy 12703 Sikorsky MH-53E Sea Dragon in 1/48 scale. This large and highly detailed kit represents the U.S. Navy’s primary heavy-lift helicopter for mine countermeasures and logistics support.
Historical context:
The MH-53E Sea Dragon is the largest helicopter ever operated by the U.S. Navy and one of the most powerful in Western military service. Developed from the CH-53 family, the MH-53E entered service in the early 1980s and was specifically designed for airborne mine countermeasures (AMCM). Using specialized sleds and sweep gear, Sea Dragons could detect and neutralize naval mines, ensuring safe passage for fleet operations.
Beyond mine warfare, the MH-53E proved invaluable for heavy logistics transport, capable of lifting outsized loads and operating from ships or austere shore bases. The aircraft has seen service in numerous conflicts and operations, including the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and humanitarian missions worldwide.
About the Academy kit:
Academy’s 1/48 scale MH-53E captures the sheer size and complexity of the Sea Dragon with finely molded parts and an accurate overall shape. The large scale allows for detailed treatment of the cockpit, fuselage, and rotor system, making it an excellent platform for advanced builds, weathering, and diorama projects.
