In the 2020s, the Russian Navy's Su-27 fleet - mostly Su-27P and Su-27UB operated by the 279th Independent Shipborne Fighter Aviation Regiment (279 KIAP) at Severomorsk-3 - continued to serve as the backbone of naval fighter aviation. Although aging, these Flankers remained active in Barents Sea and Arctic air-defense patrols, frequently intercepting NATO aircraft near Russia's northern borders. By this period, many airframes received limited avionics updates, new radios, and improved navigation gear, but they still lagged behind modernized Su-30SM and Su-33 jets. The Su-27's primary missions in the 2020s included intercepts, maritime patrol, fleet escort, and supporting training for carrier aviation despite Kuznetsov's prolonged refit. Designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the superiority of fourth generation US fighters such as the F-15 Eagle, the Su-27 was first flown on May 20, 1977. This one seat Mach-2 fighter had the Soviet Union's first operational fly-by-wire system. The aircraft is very large compared to the MiG-29, its closest Soviet counterpart, but it is built with a high percentage of titanium, which helps minimize its weight. It is exceptionally agile and is perhaps most famous for its 'Cobra' maneuver, which is a short, sustained level flight at a 120 degree angle of attack, often performed at air shows.
