Tamiya ventured into the modeling business in 1948, with a scale wooden ship model kit. During the 6-Day War of 1967, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) captured numerous T-55 tanks from Arab countries, which they quickly modified and put into service under the name Tiran 5. Many of these Tiran 5s had their 100mm guns replaced with 105mm versions and were fitted with additional weaponry: an M2 heavy machine gun on the mantlet of the main gun, plus individual machine guns for the commander and loader. Storage boxes were added to the right of the turret to aid with friend/foe identification. Tiran 5s saw action during the Yom Kippur War in October 1973 and remained in front-line service until the early 1980s, after which they were also supplied to forces around the world, including the South Lebanese Army. This 1/35 scale plastic assembly kit depicts the Israeli Tiran 5 at a length of 252mm and width of 96mm, capturing the tanks powerful form with its modified main gun, added M2 heavy machine gun, crew machine guns, and mortar mount on the left side of the vehicle. Realistic storage boxes on the right side of the turret, water tanks, and other detailed auxiliary equipment add precision to the model. The kit includes commander and loader torso figures (two total), along with markings to recreate the tank in its 1980 form.
