The Kampfpanzer Leopard 1 was designed by Porsche and manufactured by Krauss-Maffei. The Leopard 1 was developed in an envi-ronment where new HEAT (High-explosive Anti-tank) warheads were thought to make the protection of conventional heavy armour limited, so its design therefore focused on effective firepower, with the British 105mm L7 tank gun, and mobility instead. It featured armour effective against low calibre autocannons and heavy machine-guns reducing its weight. This reduced weight, when combined with its powerful engine, modern transmission, and suspension, gave it a high power-to-weight ratio, as well as superior mobility and cross-country performance. The Leopard 1 entered service with the West German Heer in 1965 and replaced the American M48 tank in many units in front line service.
