Trumpeter 3722 US Destroyer Stevens DD-479 1/200 Scale Plastic Model Kit

USS Stevens (DD-479) was a Fletcher-class destroyer named for Captain Thomas Holdup Stevens (1795–1841) and his son, Rear Admiral Thomas H. Stevens Jr. (1819–1896). She was laid down on 30 December 1941 at the Charleston Navy Yard, launched on 24 June 1942, and commissioned on 1 February 1943. She was one of three Fletchers completed with an aircraft catapult and crane aft of the after funnel, in place of the third 5-inch gun mount, the after quintuple torpedo tube mount, and part of the aft superstructure, intended to operate a floatplane for flotilla scouting. Trials and service showed that destroyer-based floatplanes were hard to use in rough seas, that the installation shifted the ship’s center of gravity aft, and that handling a plane on a small hull was awkward, so Stevens was converted back to the standard Fletcher armament layout, with the catapult removed in 1943. From 1943 through 1945 she served in the western and central Pacific on convoy escort, shore bombardment in support of amphibious landings, patrol, and related duties. After the war she returned to the West Coast, was decommissioned on 2 July 1946 at San Pedro, California, and remained in reserve until she was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 27 November 1973 and sold for scrap. The model has a one-piece hull molded in two directions (slide molds), a finely rendered deck pattern, a stand and nameplate, and two photo-etched frets for handrails, ladders, radar details, and similar fittings.
