Trumpeter is an internationally recognized injection molded plastic model kit manufacturer that produces unique subjects of excellent detail and quality. Assembly and painting are required. Item is brand new and in its original factory packaging. Listing images are stock pictures provided by the manufacturer or the distributor. The battleship Scharnhorst was the lead ship of the Scharnhorst class. Officially classed as a battleship, the original plan was to arm her with 380 mm main guns for anticipated future requirements, but that upgrade was never carried out during World War II. She was built at the Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven, launched on 3 October 1936, and commissioned on 7 January 1939. In 1938 trials showed insufficient bow freeboard; she received a bow refit in 1939. After the outbreak of war, in 1940 in the North Sea she sank the Royal Navy aircraft carrier Glorious and two destroyers, but was torpedoed by a British destroyer, took on water, and required drydock repairs. In 1941 she broke out into the Atlantic for commerce raiding; over about two months her group sank 22 merchant vessels (about 115,000 tons), seriously disrupting Allied shipping. On 25 December 1943 she sortied to attack an Allied convoy, was intercepted by a Royal Navy force led by the battleship Duke of York, and was sunk in the ensuing action. The kit contains over 990 parts, with the hull molded in two directions (slide molds), a finely rendered deck wood pattern, a display stand, and photo-etched parts included.
