Historical context:
USS Yorktown (CV-5) was one of the U.S. Navy’s most important fleet carriers in the early stages of World War II. In 1942, she played a decisive role in two landmark engagements: the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway.
After sustaining heavy damage at Coral Sea, Yorktown was rushed through emergency repairs at Pearl Harbor — completed in just 72 hours — allowing her to participate in the Battle of Midway. There, her air group helped cripple the Japanese carrier force, altering the course of the war in the Pacific. Although Yorktown was ultimately lost after being struck by bombs and torpedoes, her contribution to victory at Midway cemented her place in naval history.
