Historical Context: The Britannic and the Olympic Class
The HMHS Britannic was the third and final vessel of the White Star Line's Olympic class of steamships, alongside her sister ships RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic. Built as a transatlantic passenger liner, she was launched just before the outbreak of the First World War and was designed to be the safest of the three ships, incorporating lessons learned from the Titanic disaster of 1912.
With war underway, Britannic never entered commercial service. Instead, she was requisitioned by the British Admiralty and converted into a hospital ship, serving from 1915 until her loss. At the time of her sinking, she was the largest hospital ship in the world.
The Sinking of the Britannic
On 21 November 1916, Britannic struck a German Navy mine near the Greek island of Kea while en route to pick up wounded soldiers. She sank in 55 minutes. Of the 1,066 people on board, 30 were lost; 1,036 survivors were rescued from the water and lifeboats. The loss was a fraction of the Titanic tragedy, thanks in part to the improved safety features, warmer waters, and the presence of rescue vessels nearby.
The wreck was explored by Jacques Cousteau in 1975 and remains the largest intact passenger ship on the seabed — a haunting memorial to the ship that never carried a paying passenger.
